Meet 1to1’s Newest Staffer!

Hi, I’m Monica Rosquillas, the new 1to1 Environmental Education Program Manager.

Change happens quickly, two months ago I had no idea I would be forming part of the 1 to 1 Movement team, but  here I am and I couldn’t be happier or more excited for this new opportunity!

I’m a San Diego native, I grew up in Chula Vista, studied at SDSU, and I have lived in beautiful San Diego almost all my life. I’m also bilingual, my parents are both from Tijuana, Mexico and moved to Chula Vista when I was young.

I grew up in a family that loves the outdoors. From a young age we would go camping in northern baja, mountain biking, kayaking, hiking, and swimming in the ocean. That’s probably where my love and appreciation for our planet comes from, from being outdoors and experiencing nature first hand. Not only do I love nature, but I know that the health and wellbeing of our species depends on a healthy planet, and I live everyday with that in mind.

My work background is in environmental education. I came to the 1to1 Movement from I Love A Clean San Diego, another environmental non-profit. There, I had the opportunity to educate and inspire thousands of San Diego students to live a sustainable lifestyle. I never planned on being an educator, it just turned out that way. I combined my passion and background in environmental studies with a year’s worth of teaching experience, and that was it. So far it’s been very rewarding and I’ve really enjoyed it.

As an environmental educator I talk about sustainability all the time. So it’s no surprise that I have become a more sustainable person these last few years. In the past year I’ve gone from being a person who recycles and brings their own bag to the grocery store, to someone who strives to live a waste free lifestyle. Really! I try to make ZERO trash by choosing reusables and avoiding single use plastics. It’s been a challenge and I still make some trash, but for me it’s more about living sustainably, being the change,  and being conscious about the waste I produce and the resources I consume.

That’s something I really like about the 1to1 Movement, it’s truly a sustainable organization! Even though I’ve only spent a few hours with 1to1, learning about the organization and our mission, I couldn’t be more excited for what lies ahead. I truly feel fortunate to be a part of this movement!
