Spreading the L-O-V-E!

Whether you’re happily paired for Valentine’s Day or singing the tune of “Single’s Awareness Day,” 1:1 has some ideas to make this special day sustainable!

First off, all my single ladies..and, ok, all gentlemen, but who isn’t still listening to Beyonce after the Super Bowl? We digress, to all, single or not, we ask you consider this to be a single USE awareness day. More than half the things we throw away on a daily basis can be composted, recycled, or reused. Think first to reduce, then get creative on how to upcycle, repurpose, and refurbish before disposing.

GIFT TIP: Bringing your sweetie a bouquet of flowers? Consider purchasing a potted plant. Take it a step farther and choose an edible plant or herb. Basil, mint, rosemary, lavender, peppermint, the list goes on! It’s the kind of gift that keeps on giving.

If/when buying cut flowers, stop by one of San Diego’s 45 farmer’s markets to pick up some fresh cut beauties. This supports local business and ensures that bouquet didn’t travel 3,000+ miles or come from a source with dodgier labor practices.

GIFT TIP: We adore chocolate. I say “we” as the ladies of the 1:1 team, but we’ll go out on a limb to say it’s a safe bet other ladies love chocolate, too. We love it even more when our special someone’s bring it to us.

The dark side of chocolate: it can damage the earth, spread pesticides and pay meager wages. Sweet solution: check labels for vegan, fair trade, and/or organic chocolate. Please your taste buds while supporting sustainable agriculture and worker health and rights.

DINNER TIP: Patron a local spot! Even better if the spot is hip to the growing farm to table movement. Best option if it’s vegetarian (or vegan).
